The Mystery Gate

Christian Peacemaker Team, Hebron, March 13, 2019 – As friends gather around the room, smiling and laughing, remembering stories from the past, the phone rings. Another child was just grabbed off of the street less than 400 metres away. As we had just discussed the importance of taking time to enjoy life, rather than diving into work at every possible chance, four people decide to grab cameras and walk out into the rain. When we arrive at the gate of separation between the settlers and Palestinians, the soldiers had already disappeared into the military base with the child.

A man standing nearby smoking a cigarette starts to tell us what happened. Another person calls the UN division that covers child arrests. As the story unfolds, we learn that the child was finishing his nightly duties by locking up his fathers’ shop before returning home. The soldiers had then gone out on a patrol with the basis of a firework exploding and the intentions of arresting the culprit. While profiling every shadow as a potential target, they come across a 7-year-old boy with a backpack. The witness said that they pounced on him instantly and start to beat him. They then vanished behind the gate of mystery.

Fifteen minutes later, the sound of a chain being moved is heard and there are people seen at the gate. The doors swing open and the child quickly walks out with his hood up. He tells of being interrogated on the suspicion of throwing stones earlier in the day. After realizing that this 7-year-old boy is innocent and was merely fulfilling his nightly chores, the military releases the boy, but not before stealing the child’s backpack, which held his bottle of soda and a snack.
