Smear Campaigns

Christian Peacemaking Teams Palestine, March 30, 2019 – One has to wonder why some settlers put so much effort in smearing people from abroad who come to Hebron to monitor human rights if they are so convinced about the justness of their own cause. What is there to be afraid of if you have nothing to hide? Needless to say that this attitude has probably more to do with power than with reason. So what will be the tactic in such a case when the argument can’t be won? To smear the opponent of course.

One has to wonder why some settlers put so much effort in smearing people from abroad who come to Hebron to monitor human rights if they are so convinced about the justness of their own cause. What is there to be afraid of if you have nothing to hide? Needless to say that this attitude has probably more to do with power than with reason. So what will be the tactic in such a case when the argument can’t be won? To smear the opponent of course.

One example is the effort to taint human rights monitoring organisations like Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme Palestine and Israel (EAPPI), as pictured above. Another example is the notorious Israeli settler Ofer who stops by nearly every morning when CPT monitors checkpoints in Hebron to see if children can reach their schools unhindered. Lately, he lingers, gets physically close, films us, tries to take selfies against our will, all the while saying in English, with a mean smile, “Thank you for your cooperation with Israel!” Obviously, he tries to make Palestinians suspicious about our presence. When they pass by, he repeats his words immediately in Arabic. Fingers crossed that he will not succeed and our reputation will speak louder.
