A Christian Voice for Palestine

Remember Our Past to Awaken Our Future

The story of the Palestinian people has historically been silenced. Storytelling has served a central role in maintaining the Palestinian community, even as we are displaced around the globe. Our Palestinian Narrative Trainings offer tools to Palestinians living in the diaspora to collect, record, and share their family stories as a catalyst for social change.

The primary goals of the narrative training are to…

  • Proclaim our identity by learning about our history, family, and culture.
  • Dispel stereotypes by celebrating and sharing our strengths and heritage.
  • Strengthen our voice by communicating experiences through our own eyes and in our own words.
  • Share our story by speaking to faith-based and other communities to inspire action.

At narrative trainings, participants will…

  • Learn methods needed to tell stories in narrative form while providing historical context.
  • Share your family history by recording stories; interviewing your elders; and archiving documents, pictures, and artifacts.
  • Develop tools for sharing your narratives in written, visual, and spoken formats in a variety of public spaces.
  • Gain a deeper understanding of your heritage and contribute to the future of our community.

After completing a training, you will have the opportunity to…

  • Contribute your family narrative to a collection of others online.
  • Be added to FOSNA’s Palestinian speakers list, for opportunities to be invited to public speaking engagements.
  • Refine your stories with follow-up support from past trainers and participants.

“By sharing the story of myself and my family members, I am performing an act of resistance and of advocacy. These stories may not be much; but even if I have one person question their belief system, I am happy. If one person takes this story to heart, I have planted a seed.”

-Salwa, March 2018 participant

Designed for and by Palestinians

Palestinians wishing to capture, construct, and share their family story are invited to attend narrative trainings. The curriculum and pedagogy for the training were designed by Palestinian educators and professional trainers. Trainers are experienced in the pedagogy of narrative making, and are skilled in supporting those new to the genre. All narrative training events are Palestinian led.

Narrative Trainings are part of FOSNA’s broader campaign to amplify voices for Palestine by:

  1. Sharing the story of the Palestinian people with faith-based communities
  2. Centering Palestinian voices at denominational gatherings
  3. Fostering and promoting a Palestinian speakers list for conferences and events across North America
  4. Sponsoring national speaking tours featuring Palestinian leaders (most recently, Omar Barghouti, Ahed Tamimi, and Naim Ateek)
  5. Promoting Palestinian leadership within FOSNA and the broader BDS and Palestinian liberation movement

Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA) supports Sabeel, an ecumenical liberation theology movement founded by Palestinian Christians in the Holy Land. We share Sabeel’s mission to amplify the voice of Palestinian Christians and work with peace builders of all faiths who stand with the oppressed and promote a just peace in Palestine and Israel. FOSNA challenges distortions of the Bible and theologies that lead to racism, including anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, and condemns all acts of violence, whether committed by states, individuals, or groups. We organize and participate in events and nonviolent advocacy campaigns that advance peace and justice for both Palestinians and Israelis.
