FOSNA: Enough! Resist 50 years of occupation

Posted on Jun 2, 2017

Today, we are calling on all FOSNA members to participate in the Week of Action, June 5 to 10. During that time, activists around the United States will host actions and teach-ins to say that 50 years of occupation is enough.

As you may be aware, 2017 is a centennial year for Palestinians. It marks 100 years since the Balfour Declaration, and 70 years since U.N. partition and the ensuing Nakba, the ethnic cleansing of more than 700,000 Palestinians by Israeli forces. 2017 also marks 50 years since the Naksa, the beginning of Israel’s continuing occupation of Gaza, the West Bank, and the Golan Heights. And it means 10 years of Israel’s devastating siege on the Gaza strip.

We understand that the oppressive systems that created and have sustained Israel’s occupation for 50 years are built on the same religious and racial myths that have increased U.S. militarism and bolstered oppression at home. Today, pseudo-arguments from Biblical texts are used to justify the stealing of land, criminalization of people of color, and subjugation of entire populations, from the United States to Palestine.

These beliefs fail to heed the consistent message of justice that runs from the Torah through the Hebrew prophets to Jesus of Nazareth: “What does the Lord require of you? To do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.” In the case of Israel, the path its leaders are pursuing is one of bowing to the golden calf of militarism, greed, and destruction of their neighbors in Palestine.

In 2017, we say enough is enough. We call for direct action. Not only must we refute the myths that sustain and legitimize systems of oppression from Palestine to the United States, we must live that refusal by being louder, more self-sacrificing, and more steadfast than ever. It’s time to take a stand against the ongoing grave and violent injustices against the Palestinian people.

As a movement built on liberation theology, FOSNA calls on each and every one of our members to practice faith in the streets. Find your own way to participate boldly in the Week of Action June 5 to 10. Join a chorus across North America: Host an action or hold a teach-in to say that 50 years of occupation is enough.
