The Eternal Shame of the Evangelicals?

By Daniel Levine

Well-meaning but duped, many naive and ill-informed Evangelicals in this country have sanctioned the despoliation and genocide of the Palestinians by their Zionist occupiers and torturers.

This is a crime and is the more deplorable in as much as Palestinians are not only Muslim but also Christian brothers and sisters, all children of Abraham, just as the self-appointed “chosen” ones who supposedly are to bring God’s light to the others. The tragedy of the Palestinians is an indelible stain on any Christian supporting Israel, but especially on Evangelicals who have done so with much gusto and no real qualms.

Worse than a crime, this is a big mistake. It can only be explained by the evangelicals’ ignorance of Jewish law and history, as well as the fundamental difference between Judaist and Christian theologies. Prof Israel Shahak, himself Jewish, has brilliantly described the shady and duplicitous side of classical Talmudic Judaism, especially in regard to Christians and other non-Jews. Douglas Reed’s “The Controversy of Zion” is a definite classic by now, as is Maurice Samuel’s “You, Gentiles!” Prof. Kevin MacDonald’s recent trilogy on “An Evolutionary Analysis of Jewish Involvement in Twentieth-Century Intellectual and Political Movements”, in the Human Evolution, Intelligence and Behavior series, is also a must read.

What’s the matter with these evangelicals? Why can they be bamboozled so easily?

One reason is that they are trying to ingratiate themselves with anything Jewish, for some pathological need to “atone” for real or alleged crimes Christians are supposed to have committed against Jews over the last 2000 years. They apologize right and left, looking phony and ridiculous in the process, and dreaming about actively converting Jews to their religion. Is this perhaps in order to prove the political passages of Isa 39:23 (“and they will bow down to you with their faces to the earth, and lick the dust of your feet”) or Deu 2:25 (“This day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon the peoples everywhere….who shall tremble and be in anguish because of you”)?

Another reason is that Jesus was supposedly “Jewish”, a proposition that is at least arguable, and is to believing Jews one of the greatest insults. The Jewish Talmud, which most Christians and Muslims have never heard of, and even less read, is the monumental historical and law-giving repository of Jewish life and lore, developed over many centuries by pious and not so pious rabbis into about 63 volumes of often hair-raising legislation and stories. It is definitely a unique opus, a hodge-podge of wisdom and nonsense, called by some a “monument to human folly”.

The reason the Talmud and its many later and even modern derivatives are mentioned here is that they are also chock full with offensive statements and vicious precepts against all gentiles but especially against Christians. So are other fundamental Jewish books, for example the “Hatanya”, a fundamentalist Hassidic movement’s holy writ, where all non-Jews are described as totally satanic creatures “in whom there is absolutely nothing good”. The great Jewish sage Maimonides’s often brilliant books also contain the most nasty and racist writings against non-Jews; blacks, especially are deprecated, and are “according to my opinion not on the level of human beings…and their nature is like the nature of mute animals”. Jesus is described as the bastard son of a prostitute and a Roman soldier, and his punishment in hell is to be immersed in boiling excrement. Then there is the precept according to which Jews must burn, if possible publicly, any New Testament they can get their hands on: this obligation is still in force and hundreds of copies of the N.T. were burned ceremoniously in Jerusalem on March 23, 1980. One could fill whole volumes with this kind of officially sanctioned garbage and hatred of non-Jews, glorification of inhumanity and religious fanaticism.

If all this sounds unbelievable, well, it is unbelievable. And yet, it is there, and all you have to do is just look it up. In our day and age information is available galore – one must just have the desire to find it and study it. Knowing Hebrew or Latin or ancient Greek or other languages would be useful in studying these matters; however, it is not absolutely necessary. But then, how many Evangelicals or, for that matter, other Christians, really have a thirst for truth and knowledge, or even speak one of the ancient or modern languages that would help them learn more?

Muslims and Christians are accused, often correctly, of fanaticism and zealotry. But who would have thought that the ‘most-martyred people’, as most Jews profitably think of themselves, have often not only outdone Muslims and Christians in  fanaticism, duplicity, brutality and zealotry, but have also taught them a thing or two in this field and have been champions at this long before Jesus and Muhammad came along. All one has to do is to read unbiased history or study the Old Testament, to find plenty of massacres,  murder, racism, deception, despoliations, curses and a plethora of phrases such as “pull down, root out and utterly destroy”. All this supposedly ordered by a “vengeful God”, when in reality it reflected mostly the interests of in-fighting priesthoods. No wonder there were so many murdered prophets.

Nowhere has this kind of abject tribal behavior been developed more fully and more rabidly than by the rabbis, their cohorts of middle- and even some high-brow intellectuals, and a mob of non-Jewish fellow travelers composed mostly of half-baked journalists and even groveling Christian clergy and laymen – in short, what Stalin once called his “useful idiots”.

No doubt, Christians have, indeed, persecuted Jews in the past, but Jews have also equally persecuted Christians and committed plenty of crimes wherever they had a chance to do so. Palestine is not the first crime of the people who – in H.G. Wells words – “made God their racial hoard”.

One problem with too many Christians nowadays is that they know nothing about history, since all they rely on  is the Bible and an attitude of “if English was good enough for Jesus, it is certainly good enough for me”. St. Augustine put it best when he said “I fear a man of only one book” (timeo hominem unius libri). Will Rogers, the American philosopher par excellence, put it differently when he said: “It is not what we know, but what we know that ain’t so”. To call most Christians culturally ignorant, or at least educationally challenged, must be the understatement of the century.

On the other hand, one does not hear much, either, of the many good things  Christians, individually or as churches, have done for Jews. Christians get blamed for everything, but thanked for nothing. Who nowadays, for example, talks about the ‘Napoleonic Interrogation’ in Feb 1807 when Napoleon, the ‘Emancipator of the Jews’, hard-pressed by complaints from his countrymen about real and imagined exactions perpetrated against them by Jews in France, had to convene the famous Sanhedrin with rabbis and laymen from all over Europe attending? This bears alluding to, briefly, as it is indicative of many other similar Christian attempts at universal understanding that are seldom if ever mentioned.

Meeting in Paris among scenes of great magnificence, after not having met for centuries, the 71 members of the Sanhedrin hastened to declare that there was no longer any such thing as a Jewish nation within nations, and that their loyalty was to the respective countries they lived in. What is interesting in this context, apart from Napoleon’s desperate efforts to solve “the Jewish problem”, is that the Sanhedrin began its official declarations by recording sincere thanks to the Christian churches for the protection afforded Jews in the past! Compare that to the Zionist version of history in the Christian era current today. The compassion and protection shown Jews by Christians (and, by the way, also by Muslims) over the centuries has to be part of the equation in Jewish-Goyim (non-Jews) relations, whenever they are discussed.

Nahum Goldman, founder of the World Zionist Organization and former president of the World Jewish Congress, once said that without Auschwitz there would be no Israel. This statement goes a long way to explain why we are fed so much transmogrified history, misinformation and disinformation on the last 70-100 years. Myths have been created, lies spread and taboos enacted to further some people’s political, religious and financial interests. Regrettably, American policy is tightly entwined with the interests of those who do not primarily have American interests at heart, and could easily pull it into the abyss of a real mass catastrophe, while American presidents are playing Pontius Pilate.

No wonder that, in light of all this ignorance, false education and religious fantasies, so many Christians, especially in America, get ineluctably dragged into jeopardizing the very bases of their own religion by consenting to, and even actively abetting, the evil done to other people abroad and the poisoning of the minds of our own people.

Evangelicals and other Christians could and should be in the forefront of those attempting to redress the balance of justice and righteousness, by first repenting of past mistakes and then continuing to educate themselves about what is really going on in this world, while acting according to the precepts of Him who is the light, the way and the truth. His kingdom is not of this world, but He has put us here to do good and hate evil, and let justice flow like a river!
