A woman from Nazareth tells the story of her recovery from the Coronavirus

Watching Hadal Farraj in her home in Nazareth doesn’t even look like she’s been affected by the Coronavirus. Although the symptoms of the disease were clear she didn’t believe it herself before she received the test results: a real shock. Hadal underwent the test on Palm Sunday, as she had started to feel pain the week before.

“Something’s definitely wrong” – I said to myself. The doctors asked me, “Are you Hadal Bisharat Farraj, and this is your ID number?”

“Yes”, I answered….

“You’ve contracted the Coronavirus, we’ll call you to give you all the necessary information”: the news they gave me was a bomb… it was very difficult, I didn’t expect it!

Hadal, however, has not lost her lucidity and this, combined with her great faith, has allowed her to hold on in difficult times.

“Mine was a religious family. That is why I was raised in faith and prayer from an early age. We attended Sunday Mass. We believe that God is with us and that He helps us with everything. But in our actions, we must also use reason.”

Beyond faith, in fact, Hadal faced her illness following the instructions of the doctors: it was very important to apply the instructions given to her carefully and in particular to remain isolated from her husband and her children.

“We explained to our children that I’m infected with the coronavirus, and we don’t want the infection to spread. That’s why I told them, ‘don’t hug mommy and don’t play with her, but stay with your dad.”

In the room where she spent her quarantine Hadal read and remained connected to the outside world through Social Media.

“I read the Bible every day, followed Easter prayers and deepened many things I did not know before. I reassessed my priorities. I read many books and saw many films, and prayed a lot. When I felt I didn’t have enough strength to pray, I asked my children to light a candle and pray for me.”

A closeness demonstrated not only by the children but by all family members.

“My husband’s family prayed every day: the scent of incense spread throughout the building and the whole neighbourhood. My quarantine coincided with Holy Week, and my mother-in-law turned up the volume of the radio on which religious songs were broadcast: I felt like I was in church, and therefore I felt less lonely. This gave me great psychological relief.”

Arab society sees Coronavirus infection as a disgrace. But Hadal has a clear idea about this:

“Ever since I tested positive, I’ve thought the coronavirus is like any other virus, we don’t have to be afraid. On the contrary, if we catch it, we have to work hard to heal and be responsible, and we must avoid infecting those around us.”

Faith in God and the love between Hadal and her husband represent the light that has illuminated their path throughout their lives.

“I asked God to support me, I prayed to say: ‘Father, if you want, take this chalice away from me! Yet let not mine, but thy will be done.’

“Is it not true that if we are in God’s hands and grace, and if He is present in our house, we should not be afraid of anything?”

The fact that her whole family faced the Coronavirus following the doctors’ directives, together with faith in God, gave Hadal confidence, calm and peace. Her testimony is a precious one, which the parish priest of Nazareth wanted to make public during a homily in church.

“I knew about her and I prayed for her. We thank God for her recovery. I spoke to Hadal on the phone yesterday, and her kind words surprised me. She told me ‘I have faced this difficult situation with the resources of faith and common sense”.

Hadal recovered from the Coronavirus on her wedding anniversary. A great emotion and a great joy for the bride and groom… a day of celebration for the whole family.

“We jumped and danced with joy. I hugged my children for a long time. Now we can finally be together and play together: we are very happy because we have sent the Coronavirus out of our house!”
